Episode 3: 40th World Chung Ling Carnival

The Saturday started with gathering of us at bus stop 2 UMS which near SST. Here, Kim Bee distributed the information about UMS to around 12 people. These people were the UMS tour guide who will introduce the most beautiful university in South East Asia, Universiti Malaysia Sabah, our university to our seniors. Buses filled with alumni and their family came into UMS. We, the UMS tour guide, one by one on board the buses. Then the UMS tour began. After watching the beauty of UMS in the bus, they went to Resital Hall for the next event, a dialogue session with the Vice Chancellor of UMS, Datuk K. The session went very well as the VC gave a very clear image about Sabah, about UMS, about the people and culture in Sabah. We, Chung Ling students at that year had around 90 people studying in UMS. This become a main point for the Tan Sri, our CL senior to proud of and to praise UMS and Chung Ling at the same time. The atmosphere at that time was very supporting and very warm. I still remembered a very special moment in the session. When the MC announced that : “There is a special request from the Chung Ling which is to sing the Chung Ling School Anthem”. There was this senior being the conductor and conduct all of us to sing without music. Wow! That, to me, is the best ever singing of the Chung Ling School Anthem. Never forget that moment. The morning session ended with the senior waving hand to UMS.

In the afternoon, we went to the Jian Gou High School to practice marching for the Opening Ceremony of the Carnival. Kean Yong became our commander and taught us to march for the ceremony. I still remember he was the Flag Parade of St John last time in High School. He still very good at it although he retired a few years from the Flag Parade. As we everyone was holding different Chung Ling Alumni Association like Terengganu, Sabah, Melbourne and etc., we like became part of them. The crowd started around 5. The seniors and family claimed for their umbrella, holding their “clap”, wearing the Carnival collar shirt and then started to find their queue which lead by us that holding the different Alumni Association flags. I personally met a family from Terengganu as I was holding Terengganu Chung Ling Alumni Association flag. The senior is the grandfather to a 5 years old boy. The family told me that the grandson will enroll into Penang Chung Ling High School when he is 13 years old. They said the grandson made the decision by his own to study in Chung Ling. I was happy to hear that especially they all staying in Terengganu.

After the event ended, we took a lot of photo in the hall together with the Carnival banner. Chung Ling students really are crazy! Right?! We took a lot of funny and crazy photos that night.

Then we, again, started to send people back their home. But the night haven’t end to a lot of people as their want to stay overnight at the Tang Hotel. We first went for supper at Golden Eagle at Fushang. The supper was filled with Penang food which are Hokkien Mee, Char Kuey Tiao, and Kuey Tiao Teng. As we all, around 20people were wearing Chung Ling Gong Wei T-shirt, a lot people looking at us. The Tauke So also talked with us in Hokkien as she also was from Penang. Eating Penang food with Penang people at late night in Sabah. What a combination!
