Episode 4 (End): The 40th Chung Ling World Carnival

Episode 4 ...

The last day started early in the morning around 5am. Some of the girls followed one of the Sabah senior to arrange for the participants. Some went to UMS to fetch more helpers. Some just woke up and prepared themselves. Then our morning destination was the Gaya Street Tamu. We accompanied the participants to do shopping at the Gaya Street. Around 10am, all of us became the “broom” to “sweep” all the participants to the gathering point: Sabah Tourism Board. At there, they are being arranged to different groups. There were group going to Island, there were group going to meeting, there were group going rehearsal and there were some of them were not in any group as they want to spend their time on their own. As all of them gathered at the gathering point, we also at there to helped out. Even two of us, who were Pei Zhi and Hong Jie were being arranged to lead a group of people to island. Really proud of them as they managed to handle and cope with the last minute arrangement without any hestitation. They came back safely together with all the participants. Then after different groups went to different place, we gathered at the end of the Gaya Street. They went to hotel to have rest.

Me and Lip Fong however did not went back as we have a new task, to have a second time UMS tour for a just arriving group. We were waiting at the Gaya Street without knowing how long we need to wait. At last I call the senior and asked. Then they ask us to wait at AirAsia Airport. “ What go to airport now!? How we go !? We waited so long then you say so!?” I screamed in my mind. However, the senior asked me to take taxi and claim it later. So we really took a taxi. Then we reached the airport and together with the senior, we waited for the Penang group to arrive. Lip Fong and me each in different buses to lead the Penang seniors with a real tour guide. Having lunch, UMS tour and check in at the hotel all being done in a few hour before the closing ceremony.
Together with the Penang group, we reach the Putra Ballroom which near to the Kampung Nelayan. All the seniors were wearing smart and their wives were wearing beautifully. We were the usher for the participants.

The ending of the Carnival was not the end of our job as we still need to arrange buses for the participant to go back to hotel. Then we need to arrange ourselves to go back to.
The 40th World Chung Ling Carnival ended at the Sunday night. We the UMS Chung Ling students and the Sabah Chung Ling seniors were tired but as the Carnival was a success and the Chung Ling people all over the world that came for the Carnival were happy in certain of level. Thanks a lot to everyone that spent their weekend to make the Carnival a success. Those that helped out, I believe they do enjoy and having fun. As part of the committee of the Carnival, I am certain in future, I will and I must be in some other place joining the World Chung Ling Carnival. Proud to be a Chung Ling guy!

Episode 3: 40th World Chung Ling Carnival

The Saturday started with gathering of us at bus stop 2 UMS which near SST. Here, Kim Bee distributed the information about UMS to around 12 people. These people were the UMS tour guide who will introduce the most beautiful university in South East Asia, Universiti Malaysia Sabah, our university to our seniors. Buses filled with alumni and their family came into UMS. We, the UMS tour guide, one by one on board the buses. Then the UMS tour began. After watching the beauty of UMS in the bus, they went to Resital Hall for the next event, a dialogue session with the Vice Chancellor of UMS, Datuk K. The session went very well as the VC gave a very clear image about Sabah, about UMS, about the people and culture in Sabah. We, Chung Ling students at that year had around 90 people studying in UMS. This become a main point for the Tan Sri, our CL senior to proud of and to praise UMS and Chung Ling at the same time. The atmosphere at that time was very supporting and very warm. I still remembered a very special moment in the session. When the MC announced that : “There is a special request from the Chung Ling which is to sing the Chung Ling School Anthem”. There was this senior being the conductor and conduct all of us to sing without music. Wow! That, to me, is the best ever singing of the Chung Ling School Anthem. Never forget that moment. The morning session ended with the senior waving hand to UMS.

In the afternoon, we went to the Jian Gou High School to practice marching for the Opening Ceremony of the Carnival. Kean Yong became our commander and taught us to march for the ceremony. I still remember he was the Flag Parade of St John last time in High School. He still very good at it although he retired a few years from the Flag Parade. As we everyone was holding different Chung Ling Alumni Association like Terengganu, Sabah, Melbourne and etc., we like became part of them. The crowd started around 5. The seniors and family claimed for their umbrella, holding their “clap”, wearing the Carnival collar shirt and then started to find their queue which lead by us that holding the different Alumni Association flags. I personally met a family from Terengganu as I was holding Terengganu Chung Ling Alumni Association flag. The senior is the grandfather to a 5 years old boy. The family told me that the grandson will enroll into Penang Chung Ling High School when he is 13 years old. They said the grandson made the decision by his own to study in Chung Ling. I was happy to hear that especially they all staying in Terengganu.

After the event ended, we took a lot of photo in the hall together with the Carnival banner. Chung Ling students really are crazy! Right?! We took a lot of funny and crazy photos that night.

Then we, again, started to send people back their home. But the night haven’t end to a lot of people as their want to stay overnight at the Tang Hotel. We first went for supper at Golden Eagle at Fushang. The supper was filled with Penang food which are Hokkien Mee, Char Kuey Tiao, and Kuey Tiao Teng. As we all, around 20people were wearing Chung Ling Gong Wei T-shirt, a lot people looking at us. The Tauke So also talked with us in Hokkien as she also was from Penang. Eating Penang food with Penang people at late night in Sabah. What a combination!

Episode 2: 40th Chung Ling World Carnival

Episode 2...

The week before the carnival, we, a group of twelve went to the Chung Ling Centre. We, the young people helped to pack the souvenir package which included bag, book, caps, clap and t-shirt. Just try to do the calculation yourself that with 700 sets need to be packed and with the content of souvenir book, cap, t-shirt, and the bag itself.

Here have some photoes that show the hard work of the Chung Ling guys.

I at that time cannot help them up as I need to be in the meeting with the Alumni to know the details about what is happening and will happen.

On the first of the carnival, 15 August 2008, Friday, me as in the early already need to meet the Public Relation Department officer to settle and confirm the tentative of Saturday morning session in UMS. Luckily, the alumni lend us two Iswara cars as our transportation, if not it will consume a lot of energy and time. With the cars, I drove to Counselori to meet the officer. Then the real things happened. 10.00am I meet a few people at SKTM 13 bus stop who were free to start help up. At that moment not many people were available as most of us still have class. So around 6 people that can help. So we went to the Chung Ling centre to help up. We helped up with the last minute packaging and putting in the name of the participant. We also are being guided to recognize the table arrangement which is by year of graduation of the Alumni. The most important we need to know where the gentlemen toilet and ladies toilet are. Besides, two of our first year medicine students, Wei Bin and Keong Tat, helped the alumni at the airport for a few hours.

Then the night of gathering started. We also had a lot more helpers as they had class till 5pm. So they came to help right after the class. The task that night was to serve the Alumni from all over the world and to sell some alcoholic drink to collect some fund for our club.

We had fun that night as the alumni were very supportive and they treat us very well.

They had their gathering with steamboat and we had our dinner with fried rice which tasted very delicious as we were very hungry. Our day ended with arranging them back their own hotel with the buses. The road there was so wide but still could not support so many huge buses. After sending them all back, we also sent our own people back by motors and cars. The first day seems ran smoothly.

40th Chung Ling World Carnival

Episode 1

“40th Chung Ling World Carnival”, what such a big words and seem so grand to us, Chung Ling people.

I dare not say lucky or unlucky, the Sabah Alumni is the host for this big event. At the start, we, the UMS-Chung Ling Ex-student Club members know nothing about the Carnival, seem to be part of the Carnival indirect or without the chance to choose whether we want to involve or not. OK,OK..actually we feel really lucky and willing to contribute back to the Sabah Chung Ling Alumni as they are always there to support us, year by year.

Before the event started, we actually have a lot of preparation need to be done. That day just flipped through my file and I noticed we already start to have meeting with the Alumni last year already. It means they started to prepare and discuss a year ago just for the three days carnival. Actually, the one year preparation actually is a need as around 700 people came during those three days. Their transport, their accommodation, their meals, their program, their tour, their… all of this, the Alumni need to take care of. I really need to salute them; my Sabah Chung Ling Alumni seniors as they can plan, coordinate, and take action for the comfort of those comers. Although still have people complain this and complain that, but they really did an excellent job, at least in my view. On our side, the committee most important task is that we can find at least 30 people to help up during the three days and whenever we are needed. 30 people out of 90 total members of the club seem very easy task, right? No, you are wrong! To confirm the amount as work force during the carnival needed a lot of sms, a lot of calls, and whatever ways of communication which included our blog and sending email. This cannot blame them as we as a student in UMS we cannot predict anything in hand. We can have pop quiz, replacement class, quiz, midterm exam at the last minute notice. This is how our UMS system goes. Luckily at last during the Carnival, the people showed up and came for help. Really need to thanks those juniors for their willingness to help and their eagerness. Same go to the seniors especially those that in their final year which have their thesis need to finish.
